Year 6 pupils have been impressing us lately with their dedication and with the hard work that they have been putting into their studies. We were particularly impressed during our Mock SATs tests last week where they really rose to the challenge. They have certainly been displaying resilience, determination and responsibility and should be very proud of themselves! As well as completing a Mock SATs testing week, in English, they completed their own crime fiction texts based on the story of the Three Little Pigs. After this they spent a great deal of time editing and improving their work. In SPAG lessons they have been learning about the difference between subordinated clauses and subordinate conjunctions and how to use noun phrases.
In Maths, Year 6 have continued to sharpen their geometry skills by drawing complex 2D shapes and using precise mathematical vocabulary to describe their properties. In our Arithmetic sessions, the focus has shifted toward the practical application of percentages. Year 6 have become increasingly confident in calculating percentages of various amounts and deducting them to find new totals. They have also been finding mixed fractions of numbers..
In Science, Year 6 have been learning about the different ways that micro-organisms can be both harmful and useful to us. As well as continually monitoring the investigation that was carried out on mould growth on bread (which was pretty disgusting!), they investigated how yeast helps us in bread making. By mixing yeast and sugar in a bottle, the children witnessed a live chemical reaction; they were amazed to see a gas produced (CO2) and watch it slowly inflate a balloon, demonstrating how yeast helps our bread to rise.
Our journey through World War II continued as we looked closer at the realities of the Home Front. The children have been researching the grit and determination of everyday life, from the strict rules of blackouts and the use of ration books to the constant disruption caused by bombing campaigns. This learning culminated in Year 6 stepping into the shoes of journalists to write newspaper articles reporting on the specific night of the Blitz when Birmingham was targeted.
It has been a high-energy term in PE! Year 6 have been perfecting their choreography skills, taking a series of learned dance phrases and weaving them into original, creative routines which they proudly performed for their peers. We then turned our attention to the vibrant world of Bhangra. After mastering several traditional Bhangra motifs, the children worked in groups to layer these movements into their own performances.
Finally, Year 6 have successfully said "Au revoir" to their unit on the weather. They have built a fantastic bank of vocabulary, allowing them to name various weather conditions including reporting on temperatures. By incorporating compass points and the days of the week, they are now able to give a weather forecast in French! C’est magnifique, Year 6!
