Year 5 Blog Post - 13/03/2026

12th March 2026

It has been an absolutely whirlwind couple of weeks in Year 5. From literary legends walking our hallways to mind-bending scientific "magic," we have been incredibly busy. Here is a look at what we’ve been up to over the past fortnight!

📚 World Book Day Wonders

We kicked off our celebrations with a spectacular whole-school costume parade! It was wonderful to see so many of your favourite characters come to life, from classic heroes to modern-day protagonists. Back in the classroom, we channelled our creativity into designing custom bookmarks and tapped into our competitive spirits with a high-speed book-themed word search race.

✍️ The Great Uniform Debate

In English, we have been diving deep into the world of balanced arguments. The big question? "Should school uniform be compulsory?" The children have worked remarkably hard on their planning, ensuring they look at both sides of the coin. We’ve discussed everything from the sense of school identity to the importance of individual expression. Their ability to write formally and remain objective has been truly impressive.

📐 Measuring Up in Maths

Maths has been all about precision lately as we’ve introduced protractors. Learning to align the baseline and read the correct scale to measure and draw angles is no easy feat! I have been so proud of the resilience shown by the whole class; even when the degrees didn’t quite add up the first time, everyone kept trying until they nailed it.

🧪 A Magical Scientific Finale

To top off a brilliant first week, we were visited by a Science Magician! He showed us that what looks like "magic" is often just very clever science. We watched in awe as he balanced items in ways that seemed to defy gravity. My personal favourite was the air blaster—it was a fantastic way to see the effects of air, even though it's invisible to our eyes. It was a high-energy, hilarious, and educational end to a wonderful week.

🌟 Assessment Week Success

Finally, a huge "well done" to every single member of the class for their focus during Assessment Week. We know that testing can feel a little daunting, but the children approached every paper with a positive attitude and a "can-do" spirit. You have all worked incredibly hard, and you should be very proud of yourselves for the progress you are making!
