Year 5 have had another fantastic week filled with exciting learning opportunities!
In English, we continued our space-themed topic, focusing on an astronaut stranded on Mars. We explored the use of modal verbs, adverbial phrases, and the conditional tense with ‘if,’ and experimented with repetition to add impact to our writing. The highlight was writing our own transmissions from Venus, imagining how we’d get back home! 📡🌍 We’ve also been working hard on our Wat a Speller words, Wat a Poet poem, and perfecting our handwriting.
In Maths, we extended our rounding skills to numbers up to 100,000 and tackled Roman numerals all the way to 1000. We’ve also been practising addition and subtraction with powers of 5 and 10, using column methods to solve various problems. 🧮
Science has been all about space! We’ve started creating fact files on the planets, learning how they move in our solar system. To really bring the topic to life, we made a human model of the solar system on the playground, which helped us understand heliocentricity—how everything orbits the Sun. 🌞🌍
During our Art lesson, we delved deeper into Typography, investigating different styles as we prepared to design and make our own maps next week. 🗺️
In History we have been learning about Ancient Egypt. We learnt about the mummification methods of Early Ancient Egypt (the Old Kingdom) and Later Ancient Egypt (the New Kingdom) and we compared the differences. We learnt about the Ancient Egyptian word for the soul (the ba) and how it was believed that the god Anubis would help the ba move into the afterlife.
It’s been a week full of creativity, discovery, and fun, and we can’t wait to see what next week has in store!
