Year 5 have settled back into school brilliantly after the summer break. They have come back with lots of energy and have already learnt all of the new Year 5 routines. It has been a wonderful start, and we are really proud of their effort and positive attitudes.
In reading, we have started Roald Dahl’s Danny, the Champion of the World. The children are really enjoying the story and learning all about the main characters. We have had some lovely discussions about what might happen next and what life is like living in their gypsy caravan and children have been skilfully summarising each chapter.
In maths, we have been working hard on place value. The children have been learning about numbers up to six digits and practicing how to round them. They have done a great job learning to round larger numbers to the nearest 100, 1,000, 10,000, and 100,000.
Our English lessons have been full of magic as the children wrote descriptions of Diagon Alley. To make their writing exciting to read, they practiced using expanded noun phrases for extra detail, fronted adverbials to show where or how things happened, and similes and metaphors to build a clear picture in the reader's mind. They also used a wide range of conjunctions to join their ideas and build longer sentences.
We have started an exciting new art topic all about maps. To begin the unit, the children designed colourful inside covers for their art sketchbooks designed on different classroom items.
In PE, we started our new gymnastics topic, and the children showed real talent when practicing different individual and partner balances. We also had a lot of fun celebrating Roald Dahl Day with extra reading activities and quizzes throughout the day! Well done Year 5, what a wonderful class you are!
