Year 5 Blog - 16.05.2025

16th May 2025

Year 5 have been working super hard this week as always and you should be very proud of them!

In Maths we completed our shape topic by learning about the nets of shapes, using centimetre cubes to estimate volume and finding the volume of a cuboid.  We then moved onto a new topic where we have been practising our different calculations including addition and subtraction by column method, missing number maths problems and addition and subtraction of decimals. We have been challenging ourselves with lots of problem solving activities and thinking about the most efficient way to answer a question.

In English we have been learning about diary entries by writing our own diary entries based on the thoughts of Captain Scott during his fateful expedition to the Antarctic.  We then transferred our knowledge and planned, wrote and edited a diary based on the main character of our Whole Class Reading text Who Let the Gods Out.

In Science we began our new topic Materials and their Properties which is based around changing state.  We revised what we already know about solids, liquids and gases and then carried out an investigation into the best material for keeping ice solid.  The children impressed me so much with their enthusiasm and organisation whilst planning and carrying out our investigation, then recording the results.
