We’ve had a fantastic couple of weeks in Year 5, full of new learning, lively discussions, and some brilliant creativity from the children. Here's a snapshot of what we've been up to:
English & Reading
We’ve launched into our exciting new class novel, Who Let the Gods Out by Maz Evans. The children have enjoyed exploring the hinterland of the story – diving into the fascinating world of Ancient Greek myths, meeting a range of mythical characters, and learning about star signs and constellations. It's been a brilliant start, and the children are already showing great enthusiasm for what’s to come!
In writing, we've been finishing off our adventure stories based on Cosmic by Frank Cottrell-Boyce. The children imagined the thrilling conclusion to Liam and Florida’s escapade—particularly the moment when Liam, still mistaken for an adult, finds himself behind the wheel of a car! The stories were full of drama, humour and creative flair—we were really impressed by their storytelling skills.
Geography
Our geography topic has focused on climate change. We’ve looked closely at the carbon cycle and discussed some of the natural causes of climate change, including volcanic eruptions and variations in the Earth’s orbit. The children have been thinking like young geographers—asking big questions and thinking critically about the world around them.
Science
This term’s science has taken us into the world of human development. We’ve been learning about the changes that happen during childhood and the teenage years. The children have approached the topic with maturity and curiosity, asking thoughtful questions and showing a great deal of interest in how our bodies and emotions change as we grow.
Maths
In maths, we’ve been diving into decimals. The children have learnt how to add, subtract, multiply and divide with decimal numbers, using place value knowledge to support their understanding. They’ve tackled some tricky challenges with resilience and are becoming more confident each day.
As always, thank you for your continued support at home. Please do encourage your child to chat to you about what they've been learning – they have so much to be proud of!
