Year 5 Blog - 10.01.2025

10th January 2025

What an incredible start to the new term we’ve had! After a well-deserved Christmas break, the children have returned with so much enthusiasm and determination to dive straight back into learning. Here’s a little recap of our first week back together:

We’ve continued our journey through Holes by Louis Sachar, and it’s been wonderful to see how engaged the children are with the story. Their thoughtful predictions, curious questions, and insightful discussions have brought the characters and their struggles to life. It’s a pleasure to see them connecting so deeply with the text and sharing their ideas with confidence.

In maths, we’ve been building on our understanding of equivalent fractions. The children have been working hard using bar models, fraction walls, and number lines to compare and simplify fractions. It’s been fantastic to see them tackling challenges and explaining their reasoning so clearly. Their collaborative approach and perseverance have been impressive.

In science, we’ve concluded our fascinating topic on forces. The children’s double-page spreads, showcasing everything they’ve learned, were nothing short of spectacular! From gravity and friction to air resistance and water resistance, they’ve captured the key ideas with creativity and pride. Their effort and enthusiasm shine through in these beautifully presented pieces of work.

This week, we also held a class debate about whether screens are a positive tool. The children spoke with passion and confidence, presenting strong arguments for both sides. This activity was the perfect preparation for writing balanced arguments in the coming weeks. It’s wonderful to see them developing such critical thinking skills and learning to consider multiple perspectives.

We’ve also begun exploring our next poem, Snow by Walter de la Mare. The children have enjoyed reciting the opening lines together, capturing the beauty and mystery of winter through their voices. It’s inspiring to see them engaging with the rhythm and imagery of the poem and reflecting on the emotions it evokes.

With such a strong start to the term, we’re excited to see what the weeks ahead will bring. Thank you for your continued support in fostering curiosity, creativity, and collaboration in your children. Every day is a chance for them to learn something new and grow as individuals.

Wishing you a restful weekend, and we look forward to another exciting week of learning ahead!
