Year 5 Blog - 08.11.2024

8th November 2024

We have had a fantastic first week back in Year 5!  Children have come back with fantastic learning attitudes and are wowing us with their enthusiasm!

In Maths we have continued with our topic on multiplication and division and we have been learning different strategies to support us with our calculations.  This included deriving answers from known facts and using doubling and halving strategies to support us with multiplying and dividing mentally.  We also answered problem solving questions which required us to multiply by 10, 100 and 1000.

In English we have been rehearsing for our Remembrance assembly and we are looking forward to performing it next Monday.  We have also been learning about determiners, the prefix ‘auto’ and we have been practising joining letters in handwriting lessons.  We have started learning our new ‘WATaPoet’ poem ‘Beech Leaves’ and we are enjoying performing this in class.

In our Design Technology lessons we have been busy building bridges!  First of all we looked at different types of bridges such as a beam bridge and an arch bridge and then we had a go at making our own bridges.  We tested their strengths using weights.  We found that the arch bridges could withstand much more weight than the beam bridges but overall the laminated bridges were the strongest.

In Science we began our new topic on forces and we have been learning about the different types of forces that we know and learning about contact and non-contact forces.  We planned and carried out an investigation into how the mass of an object affects the speed that it falls and we presented our data in a table and came up with conclusions to our investigations.
