Year 5 Blog - 06.12.2024

We have been super busy in Year 5!

As well as enjoying lots of fun in the snow we have also been working hard in class and taking our end-of-term assessments in Maths, Reading and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling. We also had our very enjoyable Christmas Carol Service at St John’s church in Halesowen and we have been preparing for our 2nd Carol Concert in the last week of term.

In English, we have been learning about biographies. We started learning all about David Attenborough.  After researching his life, we wrote a biography for him.  After that, we chose our famous person to research and once we had found out lots of interesting facts about them we planned and wrote a biography for them.  We have continued reading the book Holes in our Whole Class Reading lesson, which we are very much enjoying.

In Maths we finished our topic on Multiplication and division and began our next topic all about perimeter and area.  We learnt how to find the perimeter and area of different shapes including rectilinear shapes. We have continued with our daily arithmetic questions where we cover a wide range of topics.

In Science, we have been learning about forces and carrying out various investigations into different types of force. We investigated air resistance by making parachutes and testing which material took the longest to fall and we investigated water resistance by testing which clay shape fell the quickest in a cylinder of water.

In Design technology we have been learning about different types of bridges. We learnt about Arch and Beam bridges and we made out own out of card, which we then tested using various weights.  We have also learnt about Truss bridges, which we even made out of spaghetti!  We have been evaluating our bridges as we make them, to think about what worked well and what could be improved upon next time.

On Wednesday Year 5 joined other Halesowen schools in a very special Christmas carol service at St John’s Church in Halesowen.  Year 5’s behaviour was impeccable and they had a really lovely time singing carols with other local schools and getting into the festive spirit.
