Year 5 Blog - 06.06.2025

5th June 2025

We’ve had a fabulous week in Year 5 with lots of amazing learning!

In Maths we have been practising our different calculations including written division with a decimal remainder, short division and long division.  As well as answering calculations questions we have been challenging ourselves with a range of reasoning questions and evaluating our learning at the end of each lesson.

In English we began our new poetry topic by reading the poem, ‘The Most Dangerous Animal in the World,’ by Valerie Bloom.  We then learnt about the features of poems and we have been researching animals and using interesting language to write lines for our own poems.  We have continued our hilarious Whole Class Reading Book, ‘Who Let the Gods Out,’ by Maz Evans and we have been using the book to answer a range of comprehension questions.

In Science we continued our topic on Materials and their Properties and we have been learning about changing states.  We carried out an investigation using our observation skills where we tested different substances to check their solubility.  As well as our amazing observations we also predicted, recorded our observations and evaluated our investigation. What brilliant Scientists we are!

In Art we have been learning about Architecture.  After looking at a variety of different buildings and making our own sketches, we worked in groups to make a model of a house using cardboard boxes.  We proved how amazingly creative we are!

In Music we have been learning a traditional African song, ‘Shosholoza.’  First of all we learnt about the background to the song and we then performed the song together as a group.  After that we played along to the song in pairs making chords on the Glockenspiels.
