Year 5 Blog - 02.05.2025

2nd May 2025

It’s been another busy and exciting week in Year 5, and we wanted to share with you some of the fantastic learning your children have been involved in.

In maths, we have been exploring the world of 2D and 3D shapes. The children have been identifying different shapes and learning to describe them using mathematical vocabulary such as faces, edges, vertices, and angles. They’ve enjoyed hands-on activities where they have handled 3D shapes and compared their properties. It’s been brilliant to see how confidently they are using these terms and how well they can explain the similarities and differences between various shapes.

In science, our focus has been on changes to the human body during late adulthood. We have had some thoughtful discussions about the physical and emotional changes that occur during this stage of life. The children showed great maturity when discussing topics such as memory, mobility, and how people’s needs might change as they get older.

Meanwhile, in writing, we have started an exciting new unit based on the famous explorer Scott of the Antarctic. The children have been putting themselves into the shoes of Captain Scott, writing diary entries that capture his thoughts, hopes, and challenges during his fateful expedition. They have been working hard to include emotive language, vivid descriptions, and a sense of voice in their writing — and we are already seeing some fantastic pieces coming together!

As always, we are proud of how hard the children are working and the enthusiasm they bring to their learning each day. Thank you for your continued support at home.
