Year 4 Blog - 26.09.2025

25th September 2025

Let me start by praising our wonderful swimmers in Year 4. They are working so hard in our lessons with some already moving up a group, some arm bands have been removed and some children have taken their first steps towards that tricky first 5 metres. Keep up the good work, you’ll be swimming like fish before you know it!

This week, we became scientists, mixing cornflour and water to create the amazing oobleck. We discovered it can act like both a liquid and a solid. When we let it drip, it was a liquid. When we squeezed it, it turned into a solid ball! This incredible dual nature makes oobleck a Non-Newtonian fluid.

Our experiment sparked some great questions:

  • How does adding more water change the mixture?

  • What is the perfect ratio of cornflour and water?

  • Does the water's temperature affect its consistency?

  • What happens if we leave it for a long time?

If we had to pick one question to test, it would be, "What is the perfect amount of cornflour and water?" Finding this recipe is the perfect first step to understanding oobleck and designing our next experiment.

In English we have been writing balanced arguments based on the question, should we feed animals in National Parks? We will be writing our own balanced arguments about whether animals should be kept in zoos. I cannot wait to see the brilliant ideas Year 4 come up with.
