What an amazing couple of weeks. Year 4 have been diving headfirst into the wonderful world of character descriptions. We kicked off our writing journey by exploring Roald Dahl’s iconic, eccentric villains—Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker—from James and the Giant Peach. Studying these terrible relatives gave us fantastic inspiration for how authors create memorable personalities on the page.
Building on Dahl's ideas, the children then took on the challenge of inventing and describing two brand-new characters of their very own!

To write their descriptions, the pupils focused on a specific toolkit to make their writing stand out:
Vivid Adjectives: Selecting precise words to paint clear pictures of appearance and behavior.
Powerful Verbs and Adverbs of Manner: Describing actions dramatically to show how characters move and act.
Inner Thoughts and Feelings: Uncovering what makes their characters tick on the inside.
Cohesive Conjunctions: Linking ideas smoothly using a wide range of conjunctions.
Direct Speech: Crafting dialogue that reveals distinct personalities.
Third-Person Narrative: Keeping a consistent viewpoint throughout their writing.
Our young authors applied these techniques brilliantly, producing rich, imaginative descriptions. We are incredibly proud of Year 4's hard work and creativity!
This brilliant creativity also seeped seamlessly into our artwork! We have been exploring how to tell stories through pictures, drawing inspiration from a poem to create our stunning final pieces. The children carefully used color and detail to capture narrative ideas visually. What do you think of our wonderful creations?
