Year 3 Blog Post -27.02.2026

26th February 2026

It’s been wonderful welcoming the children back this term. They’ve returned refreshed, full of energy, and have settled straight back into their learning routines beautifully. It was wonderful to start our term off with exploring the different languages around us with our afternoon for international mother language days. The children really threw themselves into exploring the different languages and it was wonderful to see the traditional outfits. We also had some lovely visitors who shared their fantastic knowledge of their mother language and answered a lot of questions.

Writing: Our Nocturnal Animal Experts

In our writing lessons, we’ve been working on explanation texts—and what better topic to explore than nocturnal animals! The children began by choosing their favourite creature of the night and putting together detailed fact files. We’ve been focusing on badgers, owls, and foxes, learning all about their habitats, behaviours, diets, and fascinating adaptations for life after dark.

Once their research was complete, the children planned a sentence for each paragraph, thinking carefully about how to structure their ideas logically. From there, they went on to write their final pieces—complete with introductions, clear explanations, and some wonderfully descriptive details. It’s safe to say we’ve got some budding wildlife writers in the making! The children should be incredibly proud of the effort, care, and creativity they’ve shown throughout.

Maths: Diving into Division

In maths, our focus has been on division—a tricky but exciting concept to master! We started by exploring how division calculations are structured, identifying the roles of the dividend, divisor, and quotient. The children really enjoyed the practical activities we used to demonstrate these key parts.

We’ve then moved on to dividing 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers, using partitioning to break down numbers before dividing by the divisor. This step-by-step approach really helped everyone see the logic behind the process, and the class has impressed us with how confidently they’re tackling these new challenges.

 Science: Forces and Magnets Everywhere

Our brand-new science topic has certainly captured everyone’s curiosity—forces and magnets! We began by exploring different types of movement and learning all about push and pull forces. The children quickly realised how these forces are part of daily life—from opening doors to kicking footballs! Hands-on activities have helped them to see and feel forces in action, and we’ll soon be moving into some exciting magnet experiments.

Design & Technology: Stitch by Stitch

Over in D&T, things have taken a creative turn (with a few tangled threads along the way!). We’ve begun exploring stitching techniques, starting by practising our sewing skills and learning about different types of stitches. The children have shown great patience and perseverance—qualities that every good designer needs! It’s been wonderful seeing them take such pride in their handiwork, and we can’t wait to apply these skills to larger projects later in the term.

Here’s to another wonderful half term of learning ahead!
