It has been an absolutely flying start to the term, and I couldn't be prouder of how the children have dived into their learning. Their energy in the classroom is infectious, and it’s wonderful to see them so genuinely engaged with our new topics. Whether they are crunching numbers or traveling back in time, the enthusiasm in Year 3 is at an all-time high!
In writing, we have been busy setting the stage for some serious drama. The children have been preparing to write their very own adventure stories featuring a character who mysteriously falls back in time into the Industrial Revolution.
We’ve been looking closely at the gritty reality of factory life and the cramped housing conditions of the era using our knowledge to create some very authentic stories. To make sure our tales are top-notch, we’ve followed a careful process:
Plotting: Mapping out the high-stakes journey.
Planning: Crafting perfect sentences to hook the reader.
Drafting: Finally putting pen to paper to bring the adventure to life.
Our History lessons have complemented this perfectly. We’ve been delving deep into the local impact of the Industrial Revolution, specifically the coal, glasswork, and chain-making industries. The children have been fascinated (and a little shocked!) exploring the different roles and working conditions of the time.
We’ve been keeping our brains sharp in Maths by continuing our exploration of multiplication and division. This week, we’ve been playing "detective" by using the inverse operation to track down missing numbers in number sentences.
We have also discovered a brilliant shortcut: the relationship between the 4 and 8 times tables. The children have been practicing the "double it" strategy—noting that if we double a factor of the 4 times table, we can find the answer to an 8 times table question! To help us "see" the math, we’ve been using:
Bar Models to visualize totals and parts.
Arrays to represent groups clearly.
Things have been getting loud (and fun!) in Music. We are continuing our singing technique topic, specifically learning how to "Sing Like a Viking." We’ve been practicing our Viking song and have even started adding choreographed actions that match the tempo. We can’t wait for our final performance!
Finally, for our class read, we are tucked away in the Nothing to See Here Hotel. We are absolutely loving getting to know the quirky characters and exploring the secrets of this mysterious hotel. Every chapter brings a new surprise, and the children are constantly guessing what strange adventure is around the corner.
