We have had a very busy couple of weeks in year 3. We have been enjoying our new whole class reading book ‘The nothing to see here hotel’ . We have already discovered that this hotel is not quite your typical hotel. The children are really enjoying getting to know the characters and the twists and turns that have already happened. We have also been continuing to practise our French skills, we have looked at colours, numbers and greeting each other. The children have explored both how to write and say all of these sayings. It’s been lovely to hear them greeting each other and myself and using their new skills.
In maths we have been continuing our topic all about length and perimeter. This week our focus has been on perimeter. We have looked at different shapes and how understanding their properties helps us to calculate the perimeter. We have also started to look at using both centimetres and millimetres. We have then combined this and have been calculating the perimeter with both units of measure. The children have worked really hard and have been able to use their knowledge of shapes to help them with this topic.
In our writing lessons we have been writing our very own poem all about autumn. Our verses have focused on animals, colours, weather and food we would see and enjoy during autumn. The children have had some brilliant ideas and have created wonderful verses.
In history we have been learning about the different jobs people had during the Industrial Revolution. We have looked at factory workers and how it was mainly women and children who worked in factories. The children then created their own role plays showing the different jobs people did within the factories with children crawling under machines and the supervisors making sure they were working hard enough. We then moved onto looking at mining and the different roles within the mine. The children had a number of sources to look at such as a drawing of a mine, a statement from a young boy who worked in the mines and a report of a magistrate who was visiting the mine to make sure everyone was being productive. The children have really enjoyed exploring the different jobs and also thinking about what they might be doing if they were around during the Industrial Revolution. They were much more enthusiastic to be at school and not working doing horrible jobs when they had seen the conditions they would have been working in.
In science we have continued to explore light. The children have been looking at how the eye sees light by looking at each part of the eye and how it works. We then conducted an experiment to see how light travels. The children had a torch and some cards. They made a hole in the card and shone the torch through. They then began to move pieces of the card to see if the light would travel through. They really enjoyed exploring this and understanding that light travels in straight lines.
