Another fantastic week in year 3!
The children have been continuing with their journey with the BFG and Sophie. We are now meeting the queen to tell her all about those horrid giants. We have continued to explore Viking music. But most importantly (and the most exciting part) we have moved into our new classroom joining the KS2 classes. The children were very excited to see our new room and have settled in wonderfully. We also loved celebrating children in need and raising lots of money for a wonderful cause.
In maths, we have been continuing our topic all about addition and subtraction. We have been focusing on using the column method and adding two 3-digit numbers. We have looked at using our number bonds to help us decide on the most efficient strategy for adding and subtracting. The children have been identifying when regrouping will happen and how this looks different for both addition and subtraction. We used dienes to help us see what happens when we reach over ten or one hundred. The children then applied their knowledge to help them solve word problems. We also looked at the HOW strategy to solve word problems by first highlighting the key information, and then deciding which operation we need to use before moving on to our working out.
In our writing lessons, we have started our next piece of writing all about the secret of Black Rock. We have started our adventure story by showing our reader that Erin, our main character who has always longed to go out to sea with her Mum, has snuck on board her Mum's fishing boat. We started our story with a sense of mystery as the fog descended over the sea before finally revealing Black Rock. Before we moved on to our next part of the story we had an experience day all about falling overboard. We explored an extract from Micheal Murpurgos ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ and Moana to help us explore the different emotions of someone falling overboard. The children then created a freeze frame and described how each of the people on their boat and the person falling overboard felt. They then used this vocabulary in their next sentence stacking lesson.
In Geography, we have been continuing our topic all about our region. We began by exploring the different continents and understanding that we are a part of the European continent. We then moved on to looking at the different countries that make up the United Kingdom and labelling these countries on a map. We then began labelling a map with all the cities within the United Kingdom the children then selected a city and created a fact file all about their chosen city.
In Science, we have been learning all about how fossils are formed. The children have explored the process of how a fossil is formed. They then use plasticine and plaster of Paris to create their very own fossils. This allowed the children to see the process of how a fossil was formed and understand the different layers.
