I cannot believe that the first term of Year 3 has already come to an end! It has been a busy and exciting few months, filled with learning, creativity, and festive fun. The term concluded with our wonderful carol concert, where the children performed beautifully and sang with confidence and joy. Alongside this, we have been busy making Christmas cards and calendars, and enjoying a range of other festive activities that have brought extra cheer to our classroom. It has been a delight to see the children so enthusiastic and engaged, and they should all be proud of their efforts.
In maths, we have been exploring the perimeter of 2D shapes. The children have been learning how to calculate the total length around different shapes, using their knowledge of sides and angles. We have also been applying this knowledge to identify missing lengths and solve some challenging word problems. The children have shown great perseverance in reasoning carefully and explaining their thinking clearly, which has been fantastic to see. These skills will help them not only in maths but in solving real-life problems as well.
In writing, we have been creating our very own non-chronological reports all about the woolly mammoth. The children researched lots of fascinating facts about these magnificent creatures, including their size, diet, and habitat. They then organised this information into reports with headings, subheadings, and interesting details, making sure their writing was both informative and engaging. The results have been brilliant, and the children should be very proud of the hard work and creativity they have shown. These reports have also helped the children to develop their research skills and learn how to present information clearly.
In science, we have continued exploring soils. The children carried out an experiment to investigate the different soil types around our school, observing their texture, colour, and composition. We have also been investigating rocks, looking at which would be the best material for a new school pavement. The children tested the strength of different rocks using scratch and pressure tests, learning how to make careful observations and evaluate materials based on evidence. These activities have allowed the children to apply their scientific knowledge practically and think like young scientists.
It has truly been a brilliant term, full of learning, creativity, and festive cheer. I am very proud of all the children’s achievements and the effort they have put into their work. Thank you to all parents and carers for your continued support throughout the term. I hope everyone has a wonderful break and enjoys their Christmas celebrations. I look forward to welcoming the children back in the new year for another exciting term of learning, exploration, and fun!
