It’s been a really lovely start to the summer term in Year 3. The children have come back with great attitudes and have settled straight back into their routines. It’s been nice to see how enthusiastic they are about their new topics and how quickly they’ve gotten back into their learning. We have also enjoyed world art day where we focused on the work of Vincent Van Gogh. We looked at his work and his style before attempting to create our own self portrait in his style. It was great to see some brilliant pieces of art but also the discussions we had about his style.
In writing, we’ve been looking at The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. This has helped the children think more carefully about traditional tales and how characters are shown. We started by talking about stereotypes, especially how the wolf is often seen as the “bad guy” in lots of fairy tales. This led to some great discussions and lots of creative ideas. Using this as inspiration, the children have begun writing their own twisted fairy tales, exploring the idea that the wolf might not be all bad—just misunderstood. I’ve already seen some brilliant writing, and we’re all looking forward to carrying on with this.
In maths, we’ve started our new topic on fractions. The children have been learning that fractions are made up of equal parts, which is an important idea to understand. We’ve then moved on to unit fractions and how to find a unit fraction of an amount. The children have been working really hard and are becoming more confident with these new skills.
We’ve also had an exciting visit this term from Worcestershire Cricket Club. The children took part in a fun workshop where they learned new skills, including batting techniques and fielding. It was a great chance for them to try something different and build their confidence.
Looking ahead, we’re really excited to begin guitar lessons this term. The children had their first session this week, and it was great to see how enthusiastic they were. They showed lots of focus and enjoyment, and we’re looking forward to seeing how they progress as they develop their musical skills.
We have also been enjoying our whole class reading book “The Akimbo Adventures” . It has been great to get to know Akimbo and his world. We are loving hearing about all the wonderful animals and also life on a game reserve. We can’t wait to keep reading.
