Year 3 Blog - 12.09.2025

12th September 2025

Year 3 has had a fantastic start to the new school year, and all the children have settled back into school life brilliantly. It’s been an exciting term already, with the introduction of our new iPads and a super fun Roald Dahl Day. The children have dived straight back into school life and have been working super hard. They have had a brilliant start to their KS2 journey.

In our writing lessons, we have been exploring poetry. We are working on creating a special poem all about the Colour Collector—a mysterious thief who wants to turn the whole world black and white! The children have had some amazing ideas for how to bring colour back. We also explored colours and how colours can reflect our emotions. The children created some amazing vocabulary on their colour charts which we will be using in our poems.

In maths, we’ve been exploring numbers and what they truly mean. We’ve learned how to break them down into tens and ones, write them in words, and even figure out what times tables they belong to. It’s been great to see everyone become more confident with bigger numbers. The children created some wonderful number posters showing all the ways we can represent numbers. We have also been exploring different strategies to help us identify new facts. We have begun by exploring commutativity where we can switch numbers around to give us the same answer and also how inverse operations can help us to find the missing numbers in calculations.

For science, we've put on our scientific hats to conduct an exciting experiment. We are trying to find the best material to build a boat from. The children have been making clever predictions and carefully recording their observations to see which material floats best. We have investigated ten different materials from different types of paper to metals. We were definitely being thorough in our quest to find the best materials.

We had so much fun celebrating Roald Dahl Day! We’ve been enjoying our whole-class reading book, The BFG, and have been discussing how he isn't your typical giant. To finish the day, we even got to make our very own dream jars, just like the BFG's! We filled them with all kinds of colourful and sparkly dreams.

It's been a busy and wonderful first few weeks, and we can’t wait to see what else this term brings!
