Year 3 Blog - 10.10.2025

10th October 2025

It has been a very busy and exciting couple of weeks in Year 3! The children have thrown themselves into all of our new learning with enthusiasm and curiosity. From exploring life in the Stone Age to investigating numbers in maths and diving into our latest adventure in English, we have been very busy indeed.

In Writing, we have started writing our own adventure stories all about a girl called Erin, who dreams of being out at sea. However, her exciting adventure soon takes an unexpected turn when she encounters the mysterious Black Rock! We began by exploring powerful vocabulary to describe how things changed once the boat set off and Erin found herself surrounded by thick fog, face to face with Black Rock. The children have worked hard to create an enticing start to our story using adjectives and verbs that help their readers imagine what Erin might be feeling in that moment. It has been wonderful to see their creativity shine through.

In Maths, we have been exploring place value and understanding how numbers are made up of hundreds, tens and ones. We practised partitioning numbers in different ways and used part-whole models to show all the different ways we can make a three digit number. Once we were confident with this, we moved on to rounding numbers to the nearest multiple of ten using number lines to help us see which ten our number was closest to. The children have enjoyed using practical resources and visual representations to deepen their understanding, and it has been great to see their growing confidence when explaining their reasoning.

One of the highlights so far has been our incredible Stone Age Day. The children became experimental archaeologists for the day, exploring archaeological boxes to uncover materials and artefacts. They sorted these items into those from the Stone Age and those from modern times, thinking carefully about what each object might have been used for. We also examined clothing and even human skulls, discovering how humans have changed over time. Later, we created our own cave art to show the animals we would have hunted, before heading outside to practise our archery skills and “hunt” our very own woolly mammoth! It was an unforgettable, hands-on experience that brought our topic to life. It was certainly a day to remember and allowed us to deepen our understanding of life during the Stone Age.
