We have had a brilliant start back to the term. The children have been superstars and have settled straight back. We have been investigators this week in our learning exploring all our new topics.
In maths, we have begun our new topic all about length and perimeter. We have begun by testing our measuring skills and making sure we are being very accurate. We have explored centimetres and millimetres looking at when we would use these units of measure, how we can convert between these units of measure and where we can find these on our rulers. The children began by measuring strips to the nearest centimetre. We then began to create our own lines and got our partners to check our measurements. We will now be moving on to metres and using our skills to measure our height and compare different measurements.
In our writing lessons, we have begun our new topic all about poetry. We have begun by looking at a poem and spotting the common features. The children have shapes to represent the features of the poem and have been matching this to where they see the features within the poem. We then explored all things autumn such as the colours, the wildlife and the food we associate with the season. The children will then use all of their knowledge to influence their writing in our sentence-stacking lessons. We are very excited to begin writing our poem all about autumn.
In science, we have begun our new topic all about light and shadows. To start our topic we have been exploring the difference between light and dark; what can we see? What is a light source? Why can’t we see in the dark? The children loved exploring this by investigating all the things we could see in the dark. The children went into a dark den where objects were hidden. Their aim was to see if they could see any of the objects in the dark.
Our history topic is all about the Industrial Revolution. The children have begun by using sources to help us identify what life was like before the Industrial Revolution and what life was like after. We looked at pictures of small towns and explored houses people used to live in before moving on to look at what cities came to look like. The children really enjoyed discussing their findings and seeing how life changed during this period. They were very interested to learn that if they had lived in this time their life would be very different with no games or even a toilet in their house!
We have also been looking at our new whole class reading book ‘The Nothing to See Here Hotel’. We have looked at the cover and the blurb to see what clues we can find to let us know what the story might be about. The children have spotted some very peculiar characters on the cover and have already spotted that this hotel might not be what we expected! We cannot wait to begin reading this story and see just what these characters get up to.
