Welcome back, everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful, restful half-term break. The children have settled back into school brilliantly this week, showing they are focused, energised, and ready to tackle the final half term of Year 3. I am honestly not quite sure how we are already at this point in the year, but time flies when you are having fun! We have dived straight back into our classrooms, eager to explore our new topics.

Looking back to just before we broke up for the holiday, Year 3 enjoyed a rather warm and very exciting day exploring Dudley Zoo. It was a fantastic opportunity to bring our science curriculum to life, and we kicked off the day with a brilliant, hands-on educational workshop focused on animal classification. The children explored the distinct ways we can group living things, focusing on vertebrates (animals with backbones) and invertebrates (animals without backbones). They started by closely analysing different bugs to find ways they could be categorised, before applying these sorting skills to much larger animals. To finish the workshop, they were handed a mystery animal skull! By asking precise questions about its teeth and shape, they used their new knowledge to correctly identify the animal it belonged to. Afterwards, we enjoyed exploring the rest of the zoo. From the reptile house to the lion enclosure, the children had a wonderful time seeing the animals up close, naturally pointing out the similarities and differences between the huge variety of species.

Back in the classroom this week, we have started a practical new topic on measure in our maths lessons. The children began by learning how to read weighing scales accurately by identifying the intervals between the numbers. They then put their estimation skills to the test, guessing the weight of various everyday items before using the scales to measure and record their actual mass.

In our writing lessons, we have turned our focus to narratives, using the classic story of Snow White as our inspiration. We began by identifying the key ingredients that make a story successful, such as descriptive adjectives, the correct use of direct speech, and maintaining the past tense. The children have been working hard to craft their own sentences using these features, building a strong foundation as they prepare to write their very own versions of Snow White.

In science, we have come to the end of our fascinating topic, 'Animals Including Humans'. To conclude our learning, we focused on our skeletons, joints, and muscles. The children explored the vital jobs these systems have inside us, investigating exactly how they operate in tandem to support our frames and help our bodies move smoothly.

In geography, we have launched an eye-opening new topic on Fairtrade. We started at the very beginning by exploring what it actually means to trade goods on a global scale. The children have been discussing why countries import and export certain items, looking at how weather, resources, and demand shape the things that travel across the world to reach our shelves.

Alongside all of this, we are continuing to follow Akimbo on his thrilling adventures with his animals. In music, we are challenging ourselves with new chords in our weekly guitar lessons, while in P.E., we have been out on the field learning how to improve our sprinting technique by focusing on posture and powerful arm drive.
