It’s been an incredibly warm couple of weeks in Year 3. Despite the heat, the children have shown remarkable resilience, keeping themselves cool, comfortable and ready to learn. Their positive attitudes have been wonderful to see, and they’ve taken everything in their stride.

Last week was particularly important, as the children completed their final Year 3 assessments. These assessments gave them the chance to show off everything they’ve learnt over the year, and they approached each one with maturity and determination. It was clear how hard they’ve worked, and how much progress they’ve made. I am incredibly proud of the way they stayed focused, used their strategies and demonstrated their growing independence.

In writing, we’ve been diving into the world of instruction texts. The children have enjoyed exploring all the key features that make instructions clear, precise and easy to follow. They’ve practised using imperative verbs and embraced being “bossy” in their writing, which always brings a smile. We’ve also focused on prepositions to help the reader understand exactly where something should go, and we’ve experimented with fronted adverbials to add variety and clarity. To extend their sentences further, the children have been using subordinating conjunctions, helping them explain reasons, time and conditions more effectively. All of this learning has led to a brilliant final piece: their very own set of instructions for a Year 3 Survival Guide. The creativity, humour and thoughtfulness in their writing have been a joy to read.

In maths, our focus has been on strengthening mental strategies for addition and subtraction. The children have been practising partitioning numbers to make calculations more manageable, and they’ve used number lines to apply the counting‑on method for subtraction. We’ve also explored how known facts can support new learning, such as using the 2 times table to help solve problems involving the 8 times table. 

Science has been equally exciting. We’ve been learning about the different parts of a flower and the function of each one. The children created fantastic wheels, with each section labelled clearly and explained in detail. Their understanding of how flowers grow, reproduce and survive has really blossomed, and they’ve enjoyed linking this knowledge to the plants they see around school and at home.

We are still enjoying the sunshine and continuing to explore all our topics. We are also looking forward to sports day next week!
