Year 3 Blog - 01.05.2026

30th April 2026

It has been an incredibly productive and vibrant couple of weeks in Year 3. The children have continued to show their brilliant selves, approaching every challenge with enthusiasm and a dedicated work ethic.

Our classroom has been filled with the sounds of progress as we continue our guitar lessons. The children are developing impressive finger strength and rhythm, showing great persistence as they master new chords. Alongside our musical pursuits, we have been following Akimbo on his daring adventures. His mission to help the elephants has sparked wonderful discussions about conservation and bravery, keeping the classes well and truly captivated. We can’t wait to see where this adventure takes us next.

In our English lessons, the children have been flexing their creative muscles by writing their very own twisted versions of Little Red Riding Hood. In our stories, the wolf is far from your typical villain; instead, he is portrayed as a simply misunderstood character. The children have come up with some brilliant ideas to flip the narrative, showing their brilliant skills and a wide range of vocabulary.

Fractions can often feel abstract, but Year 3 has embraced a hands-on approach to master them. We have been focusing on identifying equivalent fractions, using Cuisenaire rods to provide a clear visual representation of how different fractions can represent the same value. The children really loved exploring and sharing their knowledge which was great to see. We have been applying these skills to everyday items. From calculating portions of cupcake packs to dividing fruit and pens, the children have loved seeing how fractions work in the real world.

Our new Science topic, "Animals Including Humans," has started with a deep dive into nutrition. We began by exploring the different food groups—such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats—and learning exactly how each one supports our bodies. We also had some thought-provoking lessons on the impact of an unbalanced diet, helping the children understand the importance of variety in what we eat to stay healthy and strong.

In History, we have stepped back in time to explore the ancient Mayan civilization. We began by locating Mesoamerica (now known as Central America) on our maps. Using our geography skills, we analyzed the climate and landscape of the region to understand why the Mayans chose to settle there. Interestingly, we have also been drawing comparisons between the Mayans and the people of the Stone Age. Despite the vast distance in time and location, the children discovered striking similarities in their ways of life, including their methods of trade, hunting techniques, and communal living.

It has been a very hands-on, exploring time in year 3 and the children have come up with some wonderful ideas. It will be great to see this continue as we continue to immerse ourselves in these topics.
