We have had a packed first week back, and the children have already achieved so much. Here is a little glimpse into what we have been up to!
This week, we took a big step forward in our Place Value journey by introducing hundreds! The children have been absolute superstars at identifying hundreds, tens, and ones.
To help us visualize these bigger numbers, we have been using Dienes blocks. It has been fantastic to see the "lightbulb moments" as the children realize how ten "tens" transform into one "hundred" square.
In our English lessons, we have been working incredibly hard on our independent writing. We took inspiration from the beautiful and moving story, The Building Boy. The children tapped into their emotional side to write a heartfelt letter from the character Tom to his Grandma. The level of empathy and the choice of vocabulary the children used was truly impressive.
We have officially kickstarted our new History topic: Significant Events. To begin, we are traveling back in time to 1912 to learn all about the Titanic. We explored the differences between the first, second, and third-class passengers. To really bring the history to life, we held a role-play session where the children imagined what a "day in the life" on the ship would look like. From fancy dinners to the cramped lower decks, the children showed great imagination!
To celebrate World Art Day, we turned our classroom into a vibrant art studio! We took inspiration from the iconic pop artist Keith Haring. We practiced his signature bold lines and bright colors to create stylized self-portraits. The results are brilliant—and very funny! They certainly bring a lot of personality and movement to our art wall.
We've been working so hard in art exploring the world of 'roots and shoots'! This focus is going to be incredibly helpful as we head into nature to forage for the perfect sticks and twigs for our transformation project.
