Year 2 Blog - 18/09/2026

16th September 2026

It is already Week 3 of the autumn term, and the children have settled brilliantly into the routine of Year 2. We have had a wonderfully busy and productive week exploring our new topics, diving into our whole class reading book, celebrating Roald Dahl Day, and expressing our incredible creativity through The Dot song.

In our writing lessons, we have been using the captivating story Owl Babies as our key inspiration. The children have been imagining a deep forest setting in the heart of autumn, gathering rich vocabulary to help paint a picture with their words. To build a strong foundation for their writing, we have focused on identifying key text features, ensuring that capital letters and full stops are used accurately, writing consistently in the past tense, and using conjunctions to extend our sentences. The enthusiasm in the classroom has been fantastic, and everyone is thoroughly enjoying this topic. We are all looking forward to seeing the children apply these skills as they begin writing their very own setting descriptions next week.

Our mathematicians have been working hard as we continue our journey exploring numbers up to 100. This week, we deepened our understanding of place value by partitioning numbers into tens and ones using a variety of practical resources. Once the children were confident with standard partitioning, we challenged them to explore how many different ways a single number can be made. It has been brilliant to see their problem-solving skills and mathematical fluency grow as they uncover different combinations.

Scientific inquiry has also been thriving in Year 2. We have started our new unit exploring everyday materials and asking questions about what the objects around us are made from. The children turned into real detectives, hunting around our classroom to identify and group a wide range of materials. Following our hunt, we investigated how the same type of object can often be made from completely different materials. We used water bottles as our primary example and discovered that they can be crafted from plastic, glass, metal, and even rubber, leading to some great discussions about why certain materials are chosen for specific jobs.

A major highlight of our week took place on Tuesday when we celebrated International Dot Day. We listened to the inspiring story The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds and spent time reflecting on its powerful message: that everybody is creative, and that making mistakes is simply an essential part of how we learn and grow. Inspired by the book, the children had a wonderful time leaving their own unique marks through art. The room was filled with colour, confidence, and some truly wonderful creations that showcased their individuality.

It has been a week full of curiosity, hard work, and joy. We are extremely proud of how well Year 2 are engaging with their learning, and we cannot wait to continue diving deeper into all of our exciting topics in the weeks ahead!
