Year 2 Blog - 04/09/2026

4th September 2026

What a brilliant start to the academic year! The children have settled back into school life wonderfully and have spent their first few days getting used to their new classroom, finding their feet, and mastering our daily routines. It has been a real joy to see those bright smiles coming through the door each morning, and I hope everyone enjoyed a restful, sunny, and refreshing summer break.

To kick off the term, we spent some time discussing the exciting journey ahead in Year 2. We looked at setting our own personal goals and reflected on what we each want to achieve by the end of the year. Whether it is mastering handwriting, becoming a more confident reader, or learning new sports skills, the children showed wonderful maturity when thinking about their learning targets. They have returned to school looking super smart in their uniforms, immensely settled, and thoroughly eager to begin their Year 2 adventure.

Reading remains at the absolute heart of everything we do. This week, we took our very first trip of the term to the school library to select our reading for pleasure books. It was fantastic to watch the children browse the shelves with such enthusiasm, sharing recommendations with their friends and choosing stories to take home and enjoy. We encourage you to spend a few minutes each evening sharing these books together—there is nothing quite like cozying up with a great story at the end of a busy school day!

In our English lessons, we jumped straight into revising our key phonics sounds and revisiting some of those tricky words from Year 1. To say I am impressed would be an understatement—the children have completely blown me away with their incredible phonics skills! Their sound recall, blending, and determination to tackle tricky spellings after the long summer break has been outstanding. They are off to a flying start, and this strong foundation is going to serve them brilliantly as we move into more complex reading and writing tasks over the coming weeks.

We have also launched our first Design and Technology topic of the term, which focuses on cooking and nutrition. The children have been busy exploring what makes a balanced, healthy diet and discussing why eating a variety of colourful, fresh foods is so important for keeping our bodies and minds energised. They have shared some fantastic ideas already, and we cannot wait to get hands-on with some practical food preparation as the topic unfolds!

It really has been a magnificent first week back. The enthusiasm, kindness, and energy in the classroom are truly infectious, and we are all very excited to continue exploring the rest of our new topics in geography, science, art, and beyond. Here is to a wonderful, successful, and fun-filled year in Year 2!
