Year 2 Blog Post - 27.02.2026

Welcome Back, Year 2!

What a whirlwind of a first week back! It has been wonderful to see all of those smiling faces again after the half-term break. We haven’t wasted a single second, diving straight back into our learning with some very "sticky" situations and exciting new discoveries.

Here is a look at what we’ve been up to:

This week, we kicked off our new genre: Instructions. To help us understand why clarity is so important, we had a hilarious (and very messy!) experience day.

Miss Wall tried to follow our instructions to make a jam sandwich, but we quickly realized just how specific we need to be! If we didn't tell her to use a knife, she used her hands; if we didn't say "open the jar," she tried to spread the jam through the lid! It was a great lesson in using imperative verbs and precise details so that the reader knows exactly what to do.

In Maths, we have been tackling addition and subtraction with regrouping. This can be tricky, so we started with the "Make Ten" strategy.

By breaking numbers apart to find a clean ten first, we’ve built a really strong foundation. This practice is getting us ready for next week, when we will be moving on to formal column addition and subtraction. The children have shown great resilience with these bigger numbers!

Our Geography lessons have taken us on a journey! This term, we are comparing the United Kingdom to Kenya. We’ve started looking at:

The Landscape: Comparing our green hills and busy towns to the vast savannas and vibrant cities of Kenya.

Daily Life: Looking at what school, weather, and homes are like in both countries.

We are so curious to find out more about how our lives are similar and different!

In Reading, we opened the pages of a beautiful new book called The Dark. Before we even started the story, we took a "deep dive" into the concept of darkness. We discussed:

Where is it found? (Under the stairs, in the closet, or even in the corners of a room).

How does it make us feel?

Exploring these big feelings helped us truly empathize with the main character, Laszlo, and understand his bravery as he faces his fears.
