6th February 2026
We began the week with a My Happy Mind session focused on our new module, ‘Celebrate.’ The children spent time exploring their individual characteristics and what makes each of them unique. We discussed how we use our strengths every day and identified specific traits we’d like to work on strengthening.
It has been a busy week in maths as we began our new topic on Time. Using concrete equipment like teaching clocks, the children have been identifying the hour and minute hands and learning how they move. Alongside this, we have been strengthening our mental maths by recapping our number bonds and sharpening our near-doubling skills.
In reading, we have continued our journey with The Koala Who Could. Year 1 have been working hard to answer inference questions to understand how the characters are feeling. We also practiced our prediction skills, using clues from the illustrations and text to guess what might happen to Kevin the Koala next.
In PSHE, we have been learning about germs and the importance of hygiene. To see this in action, we conducted a fun experiment using soap to demonstrate how germs are repelled and cleaned away. It was a great way to visualize why washing our hands is so important for keeping us healthy.
In history, we have been travelling back in time to learn about significant people who changed the world. We have been researching the lives and legacies of Mary Seacole, Florence Nightingale, and Edith Cavell. The children have been fascinated to discover the incredible work these women did in nursing and medicine, discussing why they remain such important figures in our history today.
Overall, it has been another fantastic week in Year 1!
