Year 1 Blog - 18/09/2026

18th September 2026

What a fabulous fortnight Year 1 have had!  Our routines are established and we are doing some amazing learning!  In Phonics, we have continued to build on the range of sounds we are learning and we are gaining confidence in applying our knowledge when we are practising our reading books.  Our fluency is growing and we are really enjoying our daily phonics lessons.

In maths we are learning about addition with numbers to 10.  As well as practising adding sets of objects, we have been looking deeper into the parts that combine to make whole numbers.  We are using a part whole model to help us explore these combinations and we’re getting quite quick at recognising smaller groups of objects within a larger group.  We have also been reviewing and exploring 2D shapes and are having lots of fun sorting and naming them.

Our geography topic this term is Local Area: Villages,Towns, Cities and Countryside.  We began the topic by focusing on where we know and go to around our school.  We then looked at what a town is.  We have explored the types of buildings and services we would find in a town like Halesowen and we used playdough, lego and junk materials to make our own versions of one of these services.

On Tuesday, we enjoyed taking part in ‘Dot Day’.  Being a very creative class, we were given a dot sticker and then had to decide where to place it in our picture frames.  We then had to draw a new picture around our dot and, very importantly, we had to remember to sign our fabulous creations!  Well done, Year 1!  What a creative team you are!
