Year 1 Blog - 18.06.2026

18th June 2026

We have had an amazing couple of weeks in Year One!  Last week, the children took part in the National Phonics Screening Check.  To say they were amazing is an understatement!  Every single one of them gave their very best and I could not be prouder!  Well done Year 1!

It has been an exciting week for our Year 1 Science Ambassadors who went to a special day of Science Fun with pupils from other primary academies in Windsor Academy Trust.  Whilst there, they explored magnets, discovered the fun of optical illusion and  experimented with floating, amongst other fun investigations.  Mrs Hudson and the event organisers praised them for their enthusiasm and knowledge.  What super ambassadors they are!

In English we have turned our attention to prefixes and suffixes. The children have been busy finding, spelling and using words that start with the prefix ‘un’ or end with the suffixes, ‘er’, ‘est’ or ‘ed’.  They have written some super sentences and are enjoying sharing words with these suffixes that they are finding as they read their books.

In maths, we began exploring arrays.  We have been using counters to make equal groups as rectangular arrays and have investigated the different ways we can make arrays with the same value.  We will now be looking at how this links to multiplication and division.  We have also been learning which pairs of numbers bond to make 20.  See which ones we can remember!

We are enjoying our new curriculum topic of ‘Oceans’.  As well as being able to name the 7 continents of the world, we have explored what different bodies of water are called and how they are formed and this week, we have found out that there are 5 oceans in the world and have focused particularly on the features of the Pacific Ocean.  Next week we will see what we can find out about the Atlantic Ocean.  How exciting!

In music, we had a great time learning about pitch and tempo as we explored ‘Superhero Music’.  We used glockenspiels and worked with our partner to compose our own loud, quiet musical patterns and make music with increasing pitch.

Our favourite part of the week this week had to be ‘Dads, Dudes and Donuts’!  We really enjoyed singing our song to our grown ups about what a great team we make and sharing our special cards with them.  It was so lovely to see the children spending this special time together with their grown ups.  We wish all of our Dads and Dudes the most wonderful day on Sunday!
