Year 1 Blog - 11.04.2025

11th April 2025

What a wonderful week we've had in Year One, filled with hands-on learning, thoughtful discussions, and lots of curiosity!

In maths, we’ve been exploring length and mass using both non-standard and standard units of measurement. The children have loved comparing objects, using cubes, rulers, and scales to measure accurately, and they’ve been brilliant at explaining their reasoning.

In science, we’ve been learning about deciduous and evergreen trees, as well as the different parts of a tree. The children have shown great enthusiasm when identifying trees and describing their features using scientific vocabulary.

We also revisited our windmill project in DT. After completing our windmills last week, this week we took the time to evaluate and discuss them—thinking about what worked well, what was tricky, and how we might improve our designs next time. The children showed real reflection and pride in their work!

In phonics, we’ve continued to focus on our Set 2 and Set 3 sounds. It’s fantastic to see the children using these sounds in their reading and applying them more confidently in their writing too.

We also explored the story of Easter this week. The children listened carefully, asked thoughtful questions, and had lovely discussions about the importance of the story for many people and how it is celebrated today.
