Year 1 Blog - 03.07.2026

3rd July 2026

This fortnight, I have many reasons to be proud of Year One but I am particularly proud of how well they managed to keep safe in the sun during our heat wave.  They remembered hats, stayed hydrated, kept their movements calm and sought out shade.  Coupled with that, they managed to do some excellent learning!

In English we focused on writing reports and we have enjoyed writing about our hobbies. We wrote sentences using the suffix ‘ing’ to share what we enjoy doing with the reader.  We also enjoyed learning about the story, ‘Planet Football’ and retelling the story in our own words.  We continued to read our whole class reading text, ‘The owl who was afraid of the dark,’ and found out what more characters in the story think of the dark.

In maths, we have continued to learn about grouping and sharing - in readiness for multiplication and addition.  The children have practised making arrays, recognising groups and sharing counters into equal groups.  We have also looked at the relationship between doubling and halving.  This will help us to understand how multiplication and division work in Year 2.

We have had a great time in art with our new sculpture unit.  We will be making birds using paper and card.  The first part of our journey was to study and sketch birds from photos.  We then looked at texture and pattern, inspired by bird feathers.  Aren’t our sketches great?

In curriculum, we learnt all about the Atlantic Ocean.  We have loved learning about oceans and we found out that our oceans need our help to stay clean and healthy.  We found out that we can do this by following the 3Rs - Reduce waste, Reuse things we have finished with and Recycle.

We have also been reflecting on our year in Year One - the things we have learnt and the fun we have had.  The year is going quickly but we are looking forward to more fun and adventures together in Year One!
