What a busy and exciting few weeks we have had in Year 1! The children have been working incredibly hard across all areas of the curriculum, and we are so proud of everything they have achieved. Here is a little glimpse into what we have been up to:
A real highlight over the last few weeks has been the fantastic progress we’ve made in our writing. We have been diving into the lovely story Last Stop on Market Street, using it as inspiration to describe different story settings. Alongside our creative descriptions, we have had a huge focus on our handwriting. The children are trying so hard to form their letters correctly in line with our Kinetic Letters scheme, and their effort is really paying off!
Maths has been full of hands-on learning! With Mrs Hutchinson we have been focusing on subtraction, practicing how to count back on number lines and using the part-whole model to solve problems. With Miss Gaskin we have mastered our 2D and 3D shapes. After becoming shape experts, we moved on to creating repeating patterns, using a wide range of classroom resources to explore lots of different and colorful ways to make our patterns.
In Whole Class Reading, we have been exploring The Enormous Crocodile by Roald Dahl. We have felt both fearful and excited with each turn of the page! The children have done a fantastic job using retrieval skills to answer questions about the text, as well as making their own clever predictions for how the story might unfold.
In curriculum, we’ve been exploring local geography by learning about the nearby village of Clent. We’ve had great discussions comparing what life is like in a village with life in larger towns and cities.
We’ve also had some lovely afternoons full of art. We created observational drawings using continuous line, doing our very best not to lift our pencils from the page. We listened to some calm music while we worked, which helped us feel relaxed, focused and ready to create. We were so proud of our drawings and really enjoyed the experience.
