🐐 Trip-Trapping into a Week of Discovery!
It has been an action-packed week in Reception! From engineering sturdy bridges to witnessing the wonders of nature in our own pond, the children have been buzzing with curiosity and "troll-sized" enthusiasm.
Our new book, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, has sparked some incredible hands-on learning. This week, our classroom turned into a construction site as we focused on collaborative building.
● The Challenge: Working in teams to build bridges strong enough for a goat (and hopefully sturdy enough to keep the Troll underneath!).
● Communication: We’ve been practicing our teamwork skills—listening to our peers' ideas and using our new "bridge vocabulary." Ask your child if they can explain what arch, strong, wide or narrow mean!
We’ve been diving deep into number relationships this week using a variety of interactive games:
● Dice Games: Practicing instant recognition of numbers and identifying the value that comes next.
● Numicon Hunts: The children went on a scavenger hunt to find Numicon shapes. Once found, they had to add our "Number 1" Numicon piece to calculate one more.
● Number Lines: Using these as visual maps to hop backward and forward, mastering the concept of one less.
The school pond provided a magical moment this week! We discovered frogs busy laying frogspawn, which sparked a fascination with how things grow.
We had conversations around the children pre existing knowledge of the Life Cycle of a Frog, discussing how those tiny black dots will eventually turn into tadpoles, froglets, and finally, hopping adults. The children’s observational skills were truly impressive!
A massive "Well Done" to all our budding scientists! The Science Fair was a highlight of the week.
● Confidence: Those who entered did a fantastic job explaining their investigations to their peers.
● Curiosity: We spent time touring the rest of the school’s exhibits, and the Reception children were inspired by the experiments, asking brilliant questions and showing great pride in their own work.
