Bonfire Fun in the Nursery: A Spark of Creativity and Learning!

As the cooler months roll in, nursery class are embracing the cosy spirit of autumn with fun, educational activities based around the bonfire theme. Whether it's through hands-on crafts, music, or safety lessons, there's so much to explore! Let’s take a look at some of the exciting ways our learners are getting into the spirit of bonfire season while keeping things safe, educational, and lots of fun.

Leaf Firework Poppers: Crafting with Cutting Skills

One of the first activities to light up our nursery class was creating Leaf Firework Poppers. These crafty creations were a hit with the kids, combining the excitement of a bonfire with a chance to practise fine motor skills. Children used child-safe scissors to cut the bright autumn leaves. Once the leaves were ready, we added them to the little poppers and the children blasted them into the sky, mimicking the crackling sound of a bonfire. Not only was it fun, but it also helped the children build confidence in their cutting skills!

Bonfire Songs and Instruments: Making Music by the Fire

What’s a bonfire without a little music? To really bring the theme to life, we introduced some bonfire-inspired songs, inviting the children to join in with simple musical instruments like tambourines, maracas, and hand drums. They loved shaking and tapping to the beat, mimicking the crackling sounds of a bonfire or the soft wind rustling the leaves. Through these musical activities, children practised rhythm, coordination, and listening skills while celebrating the season's festivities.

Fire Safety and Keeping Our School Safe

Of course, with the excitement of bonfires comes the important reminder of fire safety. We took some time to talk with the children about how to stay safe around fires, both at home and at school. Using simple, child-friendly language, we explained the rules for fire safety. We even talked about the role of fire fighters. As part of our fire safety lessons, we emphasised how water is used to safely extinguish a fire. The children got a chance to experiment with “putting out” pretend fires using water sprayers, reinforcing the idea that water is an essential tool for fire safety.
