Kings, Castles, and Crowns: Reception’s Royal Adventure!

What a spectacular start to the new term! Just before the holidays, our Reception class kicked off their brand-new topic with a fantastic Parent Stay and Play session. It was wonderful to see so many families joining in the fun, helping us introduce our exciting new theme: Royalty, British Values, and our capital city, London.

Since then, the classroom has been buzzing with royal excitement. The children have jumped headfirst into their learning through a brilliant mix of creative, sensory, and hands-on activities.

Here is a sneak peek at what our little monarchs have been up to:

👑 Royal Traditions & Fine Motor Fun

We’ve been bringing the grandeur of London right into the classroom!

• Royal Tea Parties & Sensory Play: The children have been hosting their own high society gatherings, pouring and mixing in our sensory fruit tea water play area (which smelt absolutely divine!).

• Jewelled Crowns: In the creative zone, fine motor skills were put to the test as the children used playdough to sculpt intricate shapes and decorate royal crowns with shimmering "playdough jewels."

• Patriotic Art: We also explored the Union Jack, using cotton buds for precise dot painting to recreate the iconic flag.

🥁 Marching to the Beat of the Drum

There is no royal parade without some music! The children have been exploring rhythm, pulse, and sound by roleplaying as the King’s marching band. We’ve been keeping the beat using marching band drums and exploring body percussion—clapping, stamping, and clicking our way through the palace gates.

🚇 Exploring the Capital

Our small-world area was transformed into a bustling London Underground station! The children loved guiding trains through the tunnels and learning about how people travel around the capital. Outside the station, our mini-architects have been busy with creative castle and monument building, using blocks to recreate famous London landmarks like Big Ben and Buckingham Palace.

📝 Postcards and Picture Descriptions

We’ve also been putting our phonics and writing skills to excellent use. The children have been busy:

• Writing beautiful postcards to inform the King of their ‘news’.

• Practising their adjectives to write descriptive sentences about The King. (We think His Majesty would be very impressed with their vocabulary!)
