It has been an incredibly busy week in Reception! Our young explorers have officially started their new adventure with the classic story, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. From sensory art to bus-themed math, we have been diving deep into our learning.
To bring the story to life, we’ve been focusing on the different settings the family encounters. We didn't just talk about them—we felt them!
Playdough Bears: We worked on our fine motor skills by pinching, rolling, and patting playdough to create our very own grizzly friends.
Textured Painting: We ditched the traditional paintbrushes this week! Instead, we experimented with pom-poms, feathers, and string to see what kind of marks they made. This helped us think about how to describe the "furry" bears or the "thick, oozy" mud from the book.

The excitement is building for next week, when we will be heading out on our very own Sensory Bear Hunt! We’ll be navigating different terrains and exploring textures first-hand. Will we go through the long wavy grass? Or the deep cold river? We can’t wait to find out!
We’ve also been working hard on our numbers this week, focusing on the number 5 and the basics of calculation.
Using Numicon, the children have been discovering all the different ways we can make 5. It’s been great to see them visualising how numbers fit together like a puzzle.
To make addition and subtraction more active, we turned our classroom into a bus route!
Addition: We counted how many passengers were "getting on" at the stop.
Subtraction: We practiced taking away as passengers "hopped off" at their destination.

It’s been a fantastic week of hands-on learning. Check back soon to see photos of our real-life bear hunt!
