A Week of Wonder: Science Week Fun in Nursery Class! 🌟🔬

What a week it has been in our nursery class! Our Science Week was packed with exciting investigations, hands-on experiences, and tons of fun learning. From meeting wild animals to baking gingerbread men and exploring the science behind food and the environment, we’ve had an unforgettable time. Here’s a recap of all the incredible things we got up to!

A Wild Zoological Adventure 🦉🐍🦎

The week kicked off with an incredible visit from Wild Zoological, who brought a variety of fascinating animals for us to meet up close. The school hall was buzzing with excitement as we met an owl, snake, skunk, tarantula, cockroach, and a bearded dragon. Each animal was unique, and we had the chance to learn all about them from the experts.

The owl, with its huge eyes and soft feathers, was especially captivating as it flew above our heads. We also learned that snakes can move in a way that helps them glide smoothly across the ground. The skunk was very curious, and we were relieved that it didn’t feel the need to spray us! The tarantula might have looked a little scary, but we soon discovered it’s actually quite calm and gentle. Some of us even had the chance to gently stroke the animals, feeling their different textures and learning about their behaviors. What an exciting day!

Baking Gingerbread Men: A Tasty Science Experiment 🍪

Next, we dove into a delicious science experiment! We followed instruction cards to bake our very own gingerbread men. First, we rolled the dough, then carefully cut out the shapes with cookie cutters, and finally, popped them in the oven to bake. It was so much fun working together and learning how to follow steps in a sequence to make something delicious.

But the fun didn’t stop there! We turned our baking session into a science investigation by testing the effects of different liquids on the gingerbread biscuits. We experimented with vinegar, water, coffee, milk, and oil to see how each liquid would affect the biscuits. What would happen to the colour? Would the texture change? The results were fascinating, and we loved observing how the biscuits changed over time. What a tasty way to explore science!

Eco Planters: Growing Vegetables for Our Guinea Pigs 🌱🐹

Science Week wasn’t just about learning about animals and food—it was also about taking care of the environment. We had a fantastic time creating our own eco planter! We used cardboard to form a base, added a layer of sticks, followed by a food waste layer, and then finished it off with compost. This plan was all about growing vegetables that our guinea pigs would love to eat!

Not only did we learn how to build an eco-friendly planter, but we also discussed how food waste can be recycled to help grow new plants. It was a hands-on way to learn about sustainability and how we can all do our part to help the planet. We can’t wait to see how our vegetables grow over the coming weeks when the weather warms and we can begin to plant the seeds!

Exploring Heavy and Light Through Maths Reasoning 🧮⚖️

Throughout Science Week, we also had a chance to explore heavy and light objects through continuous provision play. Using reasoning questions, we investigated which objects were heavier or lighter and discussed why. We had fun comparing different items and thinking about their weight in relation to each other. The discussions were full of curiosity and problem-solving, and it was a wonderful way to bring science and maths together in a fun, engaging way.
