Easter Fun in Nursery Class: Celebrating with Role Play, Creativity, and Learning

Easter is a special time of year, full of joy, reflection, and a wonderful opportunity to explore important stories and concepts. For our nursery class, this year’s Easter celebrations were extra special, blending fun activities, creativity, and a focus on the Christian story of Jesus’ resurrection. Here’s a look at how we celebrated Easter in our nursery class, combining role play, decorating the cross, and Easter-themed maths with a fun “Stay and Play” session for parents.

Understanding the Easter Story through Role Play

Easter is a significant occasion for Christians, and we wanted to introduce our nursery children to the beautiful Easter story of Jesus through an engaging and accessible activity. Using role play, the children got to act out scenes from the story in a way that was simple yet meaningful for their age group.

We started with a storytelling session, sharing the journey of Jesus from the Last Supper to His crucifixion, and ultimately, His resurrection. After listening to the story, the children had the chance to take on the roles of key characters like Jesus, His disciples, and the crowd. They loved acting out the different parts, which helped them understand the story in a hands-on way.

Decorating the Cross: A Creative Expression of Easter

A beautiful part of our Easter celebration was decorating a cross. For many Christians, the cross is a symbol of Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection, and we wanted to provide our children with a creative outlet to express the beauty of this symbol. We set up a large wooden cross in the classroom and the children searched our outdoor environment for flowers to decorate it.

The children worked together to add their personal touch to the cross, creating a vibrant and joyful representation of Easter. As they decorated, we talked about the significance of the cross in the Easter story and how it represents new life and hope. This activity was a wonderful way for the children to visually connect with the meaning of Easter while having fun and using their imaginations.

Easter Maths Fun: Stay and Play with Parents

Easter also provided an excellent opportunity to incorporate some hands-on learning, and we invited parents to join us for a “Stay and Play” session focused on Easter-themed maths. We created a series of fun activities that helped the children explore key concepts such as height, weight, length, and capacity. The best part? Parents were able to participate in the activities with their children, making it a great bonding experience.

One of the favourite activities involved rolling the dice to see how many treats we needed to fill our chocolate easter baskets. The children measured the objects using rulers and scales, learning about measurement in a playful, engaging way. They also experimented with capacity by filling containers with different amounts of materials like shredded paper, and then comparing how much each basket could hold. These activities helped the children develop a strong foundation in basic maths concepts while enjoying the festive Easter atmosphere.
