Blast Off into Space: A Fun-Filled Journey Through Our Nursery Transport Topic!

Our Nursery class recently wrapped up an exciting and educational transport topic by taking a fantastic journey out of this world—into space! We’ve been exploring the wonders of space, from the science of rockets to the beauty of the stars, and the children have had an incredible time learning, creating, and discovering. Here’s a look at some of the fun activities that helped us end our space adventure on a high note!

Alien Spaceships and Colour Exploration

We kicked off our space-themed activities by building our very own alien spaceships. This hands-on craft session introduced the new colours of gold and silver, which the children loved incorporating into their creations. The shiny metallic colours added a magical touch to the spacecraft, making them look as if they were ready to travel to distant galaxies!

Fine Motor Fun with Rocket Shapes

Next, we got to work using our fine motor skills to make rocket shapes. With our tap tap shapes, the children tapped away to form these exciting symbols of space exploration. Not only did this activity boost their hand-eye coordination, but it also gave them the chance to imagine what it might be like to travel to the stars!

Planet Creation with Chalk Pastels

The journey through space continued with a creative activity where the children learned how to smudge and blend colours using chalk pastels. On black paper, they made their very own planets, using their new skills to create swirls and hues that resembled the magical beauty of distant worlds. It was a great way to introduce them to different artistic techniques and the concept of outer space at the same time!

Sparkly Star Letter Formation

In another fun activity, we practiced letter formation in our sparkly star glitter trays. The children delighted in tracing letters with their fingers, leaving behind shimmering trails of glitter. It was an exciting way to reinforce letter recognition and writing skills while keeping the space theme alive!

Rocket Launching Fun!

No space adventure would be complete without launching rockets! The children launched their rockets and had a blast comparing their distance and height. It was a fun way to introduce simple physics concepts, like force and motion, while encouraging teamwork and friendly competition.

Space Station Role Play

In our space station role play area, the children had the chance to embark on their very own space missions. They took on roles as astronauts and space explorers, working together to solve problems and explore new planets. This imaginative play was not only fun, but also helped develop social skills, teamwork, and communication.

Malleable Materials and Cosmic Creations

The creative journey didn’t stop there! Using various malleable materials like potatoes and playdough, the children crafted their own little alien friends and twinkling stars. The tactile experience allowed them to explore their senses while creating unique pieces to take home as souvenirs from their space adventure.

A Visit from the Fire Engine!

As part of our transport topic, we were also lucky enough to have a special visit from a fire engine! The children were beyond excited to see the fire engine up close and learn all about how firefighters keep us safe. They had the chance to explore the engine, see the equipment used in emergencies, and even use the hose (which was definitely a highlight!). The firefighters explained the importance of fire safety, and the children learned valuable lessons about what to do in case of a fire. It was a thrilling and educational experience that tied perfectly into our exploration of different modes of transport, while also teaching important life skills! A special thank you to Mr Boxley for organising this with his old crew mates, nursery really enjoyed it!

'Big School Bird Watch' and Nature Exploration

As part of our ‘Scientist of the Month’ investigation, we also took a detour into nature with the 'Big School Bird Watch.' We created yogurt pot bird feeders filled with seed and fat, adding wiggly mealworms to entice our feathered friends. The children were thrilled to hang the feeders outside and observe which birds came to visit. We spotted a robin and a blue tit, making it a special moment for everyone!
