What a busy and brilliant week of learning we have had in Year 5! The children have shown fantastic enthusiasm across every single subject, working hard to challenge themselves and showcase their creative and critical thinking skills.
We have been diving deeper into our Whole Class Reading text, Danny, the Champion of the World. In English, the children used expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials, relative clauses, and clever 'show, not tell' techniques to craft fantastic character descriptions of the mean Victor Hazell! It has been wonderful to see their vocabulary choices bring their writing to life on the page.
In Maths, we have successfully wrapped up our unit on place value—including plenty of essential practice rounding numbers all the way up to 100,000, as well as decoding Roman numerals. Building on these strong foundations, we have now kicked off our new topic on integer addition and subtraction, putting our mental and written calculation strategies to the test.
Forces have been our main focus in Science, with a special spotlight on gravity this week. The children thoroughly enjoyed researching Sir Isaac Newton to discover how his groundbreaking ideas shaped our understanding of the universe, and they produced some truly beautiful pieces of work to present their findings. Our creative talents have also been on display in Art, where we began exploring the concept of visual maps. The children analysed various artistic styles before starting to design and create their very own unique, detailed visual maps. PE was full of energy and precision as we focused on gymnastics skills. The children worked hard on mastering forward, backward straddle, and side rolls, before pairing up with a partner to choreograph, refine, and perform their own dynamic routines.
We turned into talented game developers in Computing this week! Using our block coding and logical thinking skills, we programmed interactive movement and scoring mechanics to build our own Fun with Fish and Bubbles games in Purple Mash. Alongside all of this, the children have continued building their musical skills and finger accuracy during our weekly guitar lessons, making fantastic progress. Have a lovely, restful weekend!
