Welcome back to the Year 2 blog! It has been another wonderful, bustling couple of weeks in the classroom as the children continue to throw themselves enthusiastically into all of their subjects. The energetic buzz around our learning is fantastic to see, and everyone is settling brilliantly into their routines.
In our English lessons, our reading adventure with Fantastic Mr Fox has had everyone on the edge of their seats! We have been eagerly following the clever fox as he hatches ingenious plans to outsmart those greedy farmers: Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. Inspired by his subterranean travels, the children have stepped into the role of authors to write their own rich setting descriptions. To help us get into the mood for cozy autumn nights, we focused our descriptions on atmospheric, golden-leafed forests. The class worked hard to level-up their writing by incorporating conjunctions to extend their ideas and ensuring their past tense verbs were used correctly throughout. With the help of our classroom writing resources, word banks, and sound mats, the children produced truly brilliant, evocative pieces of work.
Our Maths sessions have seen the children put on their math-detective hats. We have been investigating intriguing number patterns, carefully analysing sequences to figure out the secret rules behind them. Building on this sequence work, we dived into the world of odd and even numbers. The children put their detective skills to the test on a giant 100-number square, identifying patterns, spotting odd and even digits, and explaining how they knew whether a larger number belonged to the odd or even club.
Things got wonderfully hands-on in Science as we continued our investigation into the suitability of everyday materials. This week, the children faced a practical challenge: figuring out which materials would build the best boat to safely transport and protect delicate fruit across water. By testing properties such as flexibility, strength, and absorbency, the young scientists made predictions, conducted fair tests, and evaluated which materials were truly up to the task.
In Geography, our grand tour of the United Kingdom continues to be a huge hit. Having previously explored England, we made exciting virtual pitstops in Scotland and Wales this week. The children learned all about their capital cities—Edinburgh and Cardiff—alongside their fascinating physical features, from towering mountains to sweeping coastlines. To consolidate their learning, everyone wrote a postcard home from Cardiff, describing famous landmarks they 'visited', including Cardiff Castle and the bustling Cardiff Bay.
It has been an absolute joy to watch the children show such curiosity and perseverance across the curriculum this week. Thank you, as always, for your continued support at home. Have a wonderful, restful weekend, and we look forward to another week full of brilliant learning ahead!
