Digging Deep and Dreaming Big: Our Week in Reception!

It’s been an action-packed week in the Reception classroom! From getting our hands messy in the soil to celebrating a national treasure, the children have been busy exploring the world through science, art, and storytelling.

Here is a look at what we’ve been up to:

🌱 From Garden to Plate: Oliver’s Vegetables

We kicked off our brand-new topic by reading the classic story Oliver’s Vegetables. Inspired by Oliver’s discovery that vegetables are actually delicious, we decided to become gardeners ourselves!

  • Planting: Each child planted their very own lettuce seeds.

  • The Goal: We’ll be watching our seedlings closely over the coming weeks, learning what plants need to grow, and eventually—the best part—tasting our home-grown harvest!

🎨 Pop Art Produce: Inspired by Andy Warhol

Who knew a tomato could be a masterpiece? We looked at the vibrant work of Andy Warhol and his famous "Pop Art" style. We traded soup cans for fruit and veg, using bright, bold colors to create our own repetitive prints. The classroom is now looking incredibly colorful with our very own fruit and veg gallery!

🥣 Sensory Exploration: Tapioca Water Play

Our sensory bin took a strange and squishy turn this week! We filled the water tray with tapioca pearls.

  • The Texture: Slimy, bouncy, and completely fascinating!

  • The Learning: It was a fantastic way for the children to develop their fine motor skills while exploring different textures and using descriptive language to explain how the "bubbles" felt.

🦁 Happy 100th Birthday, Sir David Attenborough!

This week, we joined the rest of the world in celebrating the 100th birthday of the legendary Sir David Attenborough. To honor his incredible century of life, we turned our classroom into a wildlife hub:

  1. Animal Sketches: Using felt tips and pencils, the children created beautiful sketches of their favorite animals.

  2. Fun Facts: Did you know a frog’s tongue is three times the length of it’s body? We’ve been sharing our favorite animal trivia all week.

  3. The Reception Nature Doc: Lights, camera, action! The children took turns being "mini-Davids," filming their very own nature documentary in the outdoor area, observing birds, bugs, and plants with quiet voices and very keen eyes.
