Year 5 Blog Post - 09.01.2026

9th January 2026

What a wonderful week to kickstart 2026! We started the week enjoying the snow as well as beginning lots of new and exciting topics!

In maths, we have begun looking at fractions. We’ve had the best time using the Cuisenaire rods to create lots of different fractions and have dipped into equivalent fractions, using the different sized rods to help us!

In English, we have started our next narrative piece of writing based on the book Gorilla by Anthony Browne. It is about a girl called Hannah whose favourite animal ever is gorillas. One day, her toy gorilla comes to life and takes her on the most magical adventure! We’ve only completed two lessons so far but we are already thoroughly enjoying it!

In science, we have been learning all about water resistance this week! We conducted an experiment to see how quickly three objects would reach the bottom of a container full of water. We learned that when objects are streamlined, they are less affected by water resistance and travel through the water much quicker.

I can’t wait for another exciting week next week! Stay safe in this chill weather and I can’t wait to hear all about your snowy adventures soon!
