Year 2 Blog Post - 09.01.2026

9th January 2026

Happy New Year! It is wonderful to see all the children back in the classroom after the Christmas break. Despite the snowy start to the term and the chilly weather outside, the children have settled in beautifully and returned with huge smiles, ready to learn.

We have had so much fun in the snow this week!

Here is a little peek at what we have been getting up to during our first week back:

✍️ Writing:

In our English lessons, we have dived straight into our new unit: Non-Chronological Reports. To get our brains into gear, we are using "sentence stacking" to learn how to organize facts and use technical language.

Our focus animal to start the term is the cheetah—the fastest land animal on the planet! The children have been fascinated by its incredible speed and unique spots.

In a few weeks, the children will become experts themselves as they research and write their very own reports on an animal of their choice. We can’t wait to see which creatures they pick!

⏰ Maths:

We have also kicked off our new topic on Time. This week, we have been building a strong foundation by exploring the units of time. We now know that:

There are 60 minutes in one hour.

There are 24 hours in one full day.

The children have been working hard on their number lines, and we are very excited to get the mini clocks out next week to start practicing reading the time to the hour and half-hour!

👑 History:

Our History lessons have taken us back in time as we begin our study of Significant People. We are starting with one of the most famous kings in British history: King Henry VIII.

We’ve already started discussing what made him such a notable figure and are looking forward to uncovering more secrets about the Tudor court as the term progresses.

It has been a fantastic start to 2026, and we are so proud of how well the children have transitioned back into their school routine.
