Year 4 Blog Post - 09.01.2025

9th January 2026

Our first day back was made even better by the snow! We got the chance to have some fun with our friends at breaktime—we built snowmen and admired how beautiful the school looked. The playground was transformed into a winter wonderland, providing the perfect backdrop for teamwork and laughter as we kicked off the new term together. It was a magical start to the year that everyone thoroughly enjoyed!

In PE, Mr Griffiths supported our Science work by using physical movement to demonstrate the properties of solids, liquids, and gases. We then moved on to working collaboratively on paired balances that showed great symmetry and control. Thank you, Jessica, for being our photographer and capturing these impressive poses!

In our recent history lesson, the children explored the transition from Roman Britain to the Anglo-Saxon era. We reviewed the strengths of Roman Britain—including its trade, towns, and infrastructure like Hadrian’s Wall—and the challenges that led to its decline. Year 4 learned that by AD 410, the Roman Empire had become too large to manage, leading to the recall of troops to defend Rome from invaders. This left Britannia vulnerable as remaining soldiers were spread too thinly to protect against local tribes like the Picts and Scots.

We have been exploring the fascinating world of states of matter! This week, we investigated the unique properties that distinguish solids, liquids, and gases. The children practiced classifying various objects and learned that gases, such as oxygen, helium, carbon dioxide, and propane, are all around us. We even challenged the students to research these specific gases to understand their different uses and characteristics. It has been a fantastic start to our science unit, sparking great curiosity about how the world is put together!
