Year 4 had an incredible time stepping back into history at our recent Roman Workshop! We transformed into legionaries for the day, getting hands-on with some fantastic activities that brought the ancient world right into our classroom.
The morning kicked off with a burst of creativity as we designed and painted our own Roman shields. Using traditional Roman colours, red and yellow, our shields looked formidable once they were dry. But they weren't just for show!
The real fun began when we used them to practice authentic Roman defence movements. We marched, turned, and, best of all, learned the famous 'testudo' or 'tortoise' formation. Hiding under a roof of shields was tricky but lots of fun, and it really helped us understand how the Roman army was such a powerful force!
After defending ourselves like true Romans, we took a break to learn about what they ate. We discovered that Roman food wasn't all feasting—the soldiers’ diet was surprisingly simple, featuring lots of grain, vegetables, and oil.
We also had a chance to explore real and replica Roman artefacts. We closely examined different Roman coins , discussing their value and how they were used for trade. The day ended with a thrilling Roman-themed quiz! We tested our knowledge on everything from emperors to engineering, and everyone left feeling like a Roman expert.
It was a truly memorable and educational day. Now, Year 4 is ready to march on to our next adventure!
