What a fantastic start we’ve had to this half term in Year 3! The children have come back full of enthusiasm, energy, and curiosity, ready to dive into lots of exciting learning. It has been wonderful to see everyone settle back into routines and embrace new challenges with such a positive attitude.
In writing, we have been crafting our very own adventure stories entitled The Secret of the Silver Tree. The children were amazing with their creativity and imagination! They began by designing their own main characters and inventing some fascinating creatures to include in their adventures. From shimmering forest foxes to talking trees, we’ve had a whole host of magical ideas! Once their characters were ready, the children planned their stories on a map, carefully thinking about each part of their adventure. After that, they planned a sentence for every plot point to make sure their stories flowed smoothly, before drafting their full versions. It’s been wonderful to see their creativity shine through in their writing, they can’t wait to share the finished stories!
In maths, we have been focusing on addition and subtraction. The children have been exploring different mental strategies to solve a range of calculations and have learned how to choose the most efficient method for each problem. We’ve looked at how adding and subtracting 100 affects each digit and used Dienes to show these changes visually. We’ve also revisited our number bonds and discussed how they can help us to solve problems more quickly and accurately. It’s been lovely to see the children using mathematical reasoning and explaining their thinking so clearly.
In French, our new topic is Animals! We have been learning how to read, write, and pronounce the names of different animals in French. The children have enjoyed practising their new vocabulary through games and conversations.
Finally, in reading, we have continued to enjoy the magical world of The BFG by Roald Dahl. This week, we read about the snozzcumber and had lots of fun describing its truly awful taste – yuck! The children have loved exploring the wonderful words and imaginative ideas in the story. We are very much enjoying learning more about those awful giants and their peculiar tastes.
It’s been a busy and brilliant first week back already, and I am so proud of how hard everyone is working. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the half term brings!
